Smooth Summer Starts Now: Laser Hair Removal Myths, Busted

We bust the biggest laser hair removal myths and explain how the Soprano Titanium platform makes treatment safe, comfortable and effective for Milton Keynes clients.

Spring is when the laser hair removal questions start rolling in. As soon as the sun comes out and bare legs, arms and bikinis become a daily reality again, those little routines — shaving, waxing, the constant upkeep — start to feel like more hassle than theyre worth.

If youve thought about laser hair removal before and talked yourself out of it, theres a good chance an old myth is behind that. Pain, suitability, cost, permanence — we hear the same handful of concerns again and again, and most of them are based on how laser hair removal used to work, not how it works now.

Heres what wed want you to know before you write it off.

Its too painful to

 be worth it”

This is probably the myth we hear most, and its rooted in real experience — just not recent experience. Older laser machines really were uncomfortable: hot, slow, and not exactly relaxing.

The platform we use at Dermaspa, Soprano Titanium, takes a different approach. Rather than firing one intense pulse, it builds heat gradually within the follicle while cooling the surface of the skin continuously throughout the treatment. Most clients describe it as a warm, gliding sensation rather than anything sharp — closer to a hot stone treatment than a wax strip coming off.

We also tailor the settings to you. Hair thickness, skin type and the area being treated all make a difference, and well turn things down for more sensitive zones like the upper lip, underarms or bikini line. If you know youre sensitive, ask us about a topical numbing cream beforehand. Afterwards, a cooling, fragrance-free moisturiser is usually all you need — any redness tends to settle within a few hours.

Laser only works if you have fair skin and dark hair”

Theres a reason this one has stuck around — it used to be true. Early lasers worked by targeting pigment, and on darker skin they couldnt always tell the difference between pigment in the hair and pigment in the skin. That made treatment riskier for darker skin tones, and the myth followed.

Modern multi-wavelength systems changed that. Soprano Titanium combines three different wavelengths, which between them can safely treat a much wider range of skin tones — when its used by someone properly trained, and when its preceded by a proper consultation. That second part is what matters most. Before any course begins, well go through your medical history, work out your Fitzpatrick skin type, and run a patch test so we can see how your skin actually responds before going any further.

Laser damages your skin”

and

you cant have it if you love the sun”

Two separate worries, but they tend to come up together, so lets deal with both.

On skin damage: laser hair removal targets the follicle beneath the surface, not the skin itself. It isnt comparable to a harsh scrub, a strong peel, or the friction of daily shaving — if anything, cutting out that repeated irritation tends to calm the skin down. Clients often notice fewer ingrown hairs, less shaving rash on legs and underarms, and less of that strawberry skin” texture that comes from constant regrowth.

We keep laser sessions separate from more intensive treatments like microneedling or peels, simply to avoid overloading the skin barrier, and well factor in any history of pigmentation or sensitivity when planning your course.

On the sun: you dont need to give up summer to have laser, but timing matters. Starting a course now, before youre spending whole days outside, gives your skin a head start. Once youre underway, the main things to avoid are sunbeds, deliberate tanning, and fake tan on the areas being treated — and if you do get caught out and end up sunburnt or very tanned, well simply pause until your skin has settled. None of this rules out a glow; hydrating facials and non-photosensitising treatments can keep your skin looking fresh without interfering with your laser plan.

Its too expensive” and its not actually permanent”

Both of these come down to expectations. Laser hair removal is a bigger upfront decision than buying another razor or booking a wax — but its also solving a different problem.

Think about what youre currently spending, in time as much as money: regular wax or thread appointments, a steady stream of razors and creams, and the bits that dont show up on a receipt — shaving rash, ingrown hairs, that moment before you put shorts on where you check whether you need to do” your legs again.

Permanent” is a slightly misleading word, and wed rather be upfront about that. The proper term is permanent hair reduction — because hair grows in cycles, it takes several sessions to catch follicles at the right stage, but most people see a real drop in thickness and density, with regrowth becoming finer and patchier over time. Some areas that are more hormone-driven, like the chin or bikini line, may need the occasional top-up later on, but thats a world away from ongoing shaving or waxing.

Well plan your course around your goals and review progress as you go — and if it makes sense to combine laser with something else, such as skin tightening for the underarms or treatment for pigmentation left by old ingrown hairs, well talk you through that too.

Getting the most out of your sessions

A little preparation goes a long way. In the run-up to treatment, it helps to avoid strong acids, retinoids, body scrubs and sunbeds on the area youre having treated. Stick to gentle cleansers and a fragrance-free SPF, and your skin will be in a much better place to respond well.

Afterwards, keep it simple: a cooling gel or light moisturiser, no hot baths or saunas for a day or so, and let any redness settle on its own. If youre already managing something else — acne, pigmentation, eczema — let your therapist know, because we can usually adjust the rest of your skincare plan so everything works together.

Smooth, calm skin that doesnt need constant attention is a genuinely freeing thing, and most of what stands between people and that is outdated information rather than anything about their skin or suitability. If youve been holding off because of something you heard, wed rather talk it through properly.
